Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

Here are some answers to questions I get asked a lot. I hope you find them useful. But don’t hesitate to ask me here, if you if you can’t find what you’re looking for.

When’s the best time to start?

Don’t wait! Come along anytime. The syllabus is designed as a rolling programme, so you can start anytime. Anything you miss one term you cover in the next term. Details of classes here.

I haven’t done anything like this before. Will I feel out of my depth?

The classes are mixed ability and mixed experience level. You’ll learn at your own pace. Dancers are friendly and welcoming & you’ll feel at ease.

How long does it take to learn?

The more you learn, the more you’ll want to learn. Belly dance takes time and practice. Everybody learns at their own speed, and it depends how many lessons you take, how much you practice, etc. Be kind to yourself. Don’t be too impatient and enjoy the learning.

Will belly dance make me lose weight?

Belly dance is a wonderful exercise for the whole body. It’s great for balance and co-ordination and especially good for toning. As a beginner, you probably won’t be “working out” like you would in an aerobics class (more advanced dancers may do) but you’ll be amazed at the changes you can achieve, through improved posture, core strength and muscle tone.

Belly dance is a great activity to incorporate into a weight loss or lifestyle programme.

Am I too old to belly dance?

I think I’m skinny – will I have a big enough belly? I’m self-conscious about my body – should I wait until I have lost weight?

I hear these questions a lot. Belly dance is suitable for old and young alike.  You don’t need to be any size or shape. Belly dance is a celebration of our bodies, whatever your shape, or size or level of fitness.

Is the class for women only?

The classes are for everybody. If you’d like to learn this dance, it’s for you.

Do I need special clothes or equipment? Do I have to show my belly?

We dance in bare feet or soft-soled shoes (ballet type) if you prefer, but you need to feel the floor. Wear loose clothing, leggings and T-shirt are fine. You might want to tie a scarf around your hips, to accentuate hip moves. No, you don’t have to show your belly…unless you want to.
